Short-Term Study Abroad: Developing Global Englishes Awareness

Abstract English use in many short-term study abroad (STSA) contexts is often more fluid than its common representation language education. Based on such representation, students may develop perspectives towards effective as fixed standard norms. Experiences of communication during STSA help form new use, linked to Global Englishes (GE), which accounts for the fluidity global contexts. The formation be evident GE understandings, i.e., pluralistic over monolithic awareness English, recognition linguistic diversity among users, acceptance variability and role lingua franca (ELF). This qualitative interview investigated development 15 Japanese university participating different STSA. Semi-structured interviews were conducted pre-sojourn, post-sojourn, six months later.
